Who are the parents of a son with surname Poore?
« on: Wednesday 10 May 23 02:40 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

This post is connected to https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=872585.0 in which a record of deaths showed a 1 month baby by the surname of Poore (not Poole) had died September 6th, 1864 on board the ship "British Empire".

The baby is the child of Mary Ann Poore - grandparents William Henry Poore and Mary Ann Teagle who were Third Cabin Passengers on board the "British Empire".

The Poore you see right at the bottom is the 13 year old son of William and Mary Poore - so also definitely not him.

Thank you for your help,

Kind regards,

Ashley

Hi Ashley,

I found an article in The Lyttelton Times of 8 September 1864 (page 8) which list births and deaths by name on the British Empire's voyage. I can't see a POORE (or a POOLE).

This passenger list for the British Empire lists only one person named POORE, one Henry F. (Framers?) POORE.
Added: he was aged 13. Did he accompany a family group, perhaps?
http://www.yesteryears.co.nz/shipping/passlists/britishempire.html

He appears to have married a Mary SMEATON at Christchurch in 1873.

National Library holds four records pertaining to this vessel; two for a later voyage and two for this 1864 voyage which refer to copies of the ships' Gazette.

This original passenger index lists only one POORE, the same Henry F.,  -> see image #20.

Hi Ashley,

Not all the passengers listed in your list appear on the 1864 voyage of the British Empire. This suggests to me that your list might be a compilation list from different voyages, perhaps.

Can you please provide a source or a link for the original image you provided above, vis;
MS-Papers-7607.jpg

Lastly, the Lyttelton Times article mentioned above conveniently lists the names of those born and died on the voyage. The only surname in both lists is TEMPLETON.

Oooh Ashley ... I thought we'd had this query before ... and that we'd found the answer  ???  ;D

Ship:  "British Empire" - 1864

POORE - age:  0 --  Born at Sea
Sex :   Unknown

DIED -  6 September 1864

Infant of  M.A. POORE - spinster

....    on your "British Empire" list > first column > number six down > Mary POORE ... how do you know this Mary POORE is the wife of W.H. POORE ???

Top of that list says "W.H. POORE and wife" ... then listed separately, Mary POORE / W.H. POORE / Henry POORE   ....

I'd be guided by what the Official record of Deaths of Passsengers at Sea  (see source given in previous post) says .... "Infant of M. A. POORE, spinster".

Ashley, do you have further information for the POORE family or families on this voyage ?

*  Where did they hail from  / ages / occupations, etc.  ? From additonal info we may be able to ascertain exactly who the child's mother was.

Edited - struck through info above, has now been found.

Have found what appears to be a well-researched "tree" at ancestry for William Henry and Mary Ann POORE.

It seems they had a daughter, Mary (Mary Ann) bc 1831, who accompanied them to NZ on the "British Empire" in 1864.
There is some other information re: the daughter and her life in NZ, which I will check out further before adding here.

Mary Ann POORE (d/o W.H. POORE and Mary Ann nee TEAGLE)

Born Somerset, ENG  -- Baptism record 1831 -- she appears with parents & family on 1841 census -- and on 1861 census she is again with parents and siblings - listed as age 30 - born Somerset, Bath.

Appears to have had a sad / troubled life in NZ after her 1864 arrival.  Tree owner has references for her relating to Seacliff Asylum ... and her eventual death in 1902 at Porirua (Wellington) [which possibly suggests she was a patient at the Porirua Hospital ???    I'm not able to confirm that aspect though.]    [Excerpts from tree @ancestry.com ]

Her cemetery record can be found at findagrave NZ site  (Also at Porirua City Council Cemeteries site).

Inquest into her death (about quarter way down page)  ... begins  > "Two inquests ...."

Terribly sad.   :(
