arrest to trial timescale
« on: Saturday 13 May 23 16:00 BST (UK) »
I have found newspaper reports that may concern someone I'm interested in.  How long did it take for cases to come to court in early 20th century New York?  I can find no evidence of a court case so perhaps the charges were dismissed.

The accused may have pleaded guilty so there was no trial.

Would that then have been reported in the newspapers?

In a small town, even minor crimes - petty theft, vandalism, drunk and disorderly, stray hogs - got reported in the local newspaper.  In a large city, minor crimes did not make the paper unless the accused or the victim was a noteworthy public figure.

Where in New York was it?  I have seen some prison records, but it depends on location.

The newspaper article just says he was arrested in New York and was now in jail.

More details are needed - a name and a date, at least.  Also the alleged crime and any hint of where it occurred.  New York is a big place - slightly larger than England.  Did this happen in NYC or somewhere upstate?
