James Deeley/Dealey/Daley
« on: Sunday 21 May 23 10:47 BST (UK) »
Hello

I am looking for the Irish family of James Deeley (also Daley, Dealey – his descendants all ultimately settled on Deeley).

James Deeley (but signing “James Dealey”) married Elizabeth Cotterill on 26 March 1815 at Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.

James (birthplace of Ireland) and Elizabeth are listed with their (presumed) two children, Arthur (c.1816) and Sarah (c.1818) on the 1841 Census at Portway Road, Wednesbury, England.

Elizabeth Dealey (wife of James Dealey, Labourer) died on 21 October 1843 at Portway Road, Wednesbury.  Her widower, James Dealey, signed his name.

James Daley (70) married Sarah Harper (also 70, née Burgess) on 11 September 1849 at St James’s Church, Wednesbury, Staffordshire.  James does not sign his own name and his father is given as “Neil Daley, Taylor”.  James and Sarah are at Portway, St James.

James (birthplace of Ireland) and Sarah are listed on the 1851 Census at Portway Road, Wednesbury.

James Deeley died on 18 March 1854 at Portway Road, Wednesbury.  His age was given as 80 years by his widow, Sarah, who did not write her signature.

Neil Daley, given as James’s father and presumable a tailor from Ireland, could be Niall Dealey?

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
Thank you.

I suspect that 'Neil' might be more likely to be Cornelius than Niall for the time period you mention (son James born c1774).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Certainly in my tree various spellings were used dependent on author & generation:

Lease from William Brownlow to Hector McNaile for Farm let of 8 acres 1 rood 10p in Munbrief, manor of Brownlowderry for the natural lives of said Hector McNaile, Naile McNaile his son aged 21 yrs and William McNaile, grandson aged 7yrs; from 1 May 1784.

Naile McNeile, Monbrieff. Freeholder - date of Registry 26 August 1818
1833 Tithe Applotments: McNeill, NEAL, Moynbrief

Marriage 20 Jul 1852 of NEILL McNeill, aged 38 son of Neill McNeill

I was only able to visit PRONI and locate the old Leases and tie in the Freeholder records because most of the family stayed put in the same townland and parish (known from the 1850's civil marriages to 1901 & 1911 census & deaths etc) and so work back in time. Ireland alone is not much to go on - there are very few records on or off-line pre-1800 to connect from England (or further afield) using name alone with any certainty is the right person & location you are connecting to.

thanks had made that typo in tree

I descend from his brother Hector whose father was recorded as 'Neal' on his 1853 re-marriage performed by a different Shankill curate https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1853/09454/5425551.pdf.

Actually must look into whether he had a son Neil who died young or emigrated, he mentioned 10 others in his 1878 Will, missing was just Margaret who went to New Zealand 1860 and there is a gap 1836-42 (or thereabouts).

I would think it very difficult for you to find records early enough. You would an area and religion to search.

Guess based on the baptism and later marriages would be Church of Ireland (or Presbyterian) but online index resources for those on RootsIreland or Familysearch are scant for the 1700's and an awful lot of C of I were lost 1922.
