Josiah Gannaway and Mary c1760s Tewkesbury area
« on: Tuesday 20 June 23 19:33 BST (UK) »
Hi
I have Thomas Ganaway 1773 Tewkesbury, father Josiah and mother Mary.

I've looked at the Tewkesbury records on ancestry and attempted to look on family search (although I'm not always very good on this). I've found children being born to Josiah and Mary but also Josiah and Martha. The only marriage I can find is to Martha in may 1762. Can't find one for a Josiah and Mary. Thomas is the direct ancestor and he has a son with Lydia called John turner Ganaway in 1808 in Tewkesbury. Can anyone shed any light on Mary and Martha please?

Thank you

Thank you for those and the link ... I'd never seen that before.

So ... Do you think Martha and Mary are one and the same??

Hello Nanny

I wondered if you had solved the problem?

On Ancestry there are what seems to be the Bishops's Transcripts which (in the case I looked at, Josia bap. February 7 1763) gives Mary as the mother's name. The original register I haven't seen but I suppose that shows Martha, and that was used by Familysearch from whatever IRI is. As the date is the same it must be the same child. I suggest that the clerk who made the copy just made a mistake, but it's odd that it happened three times.

I have
Josia Feb 7 1763
Martha Mar 19 1764
Isaac Jun 16 1766
Mary Oct 18 1769 (not on Findmypast)
Elizabeth Mar 30 1772
Thomas Apr 11 1773

I am researching for a friend descended from Thomas & Lydia's daughter Elizabeth.

Yours,

Rory

Hi there.
I never did find the answer ... But I've just looked at the original register on ancestry. It gives Martha as Josiah baptised 7 Feb 1763's mother.

If you've got an ancestry sub, hopefully this link will work:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/127157:4732?tid=&pid=&queryId=7aa6b11f-90bf-480d-9c5c-c1335d3a8ca3&_phsrc=SSl653&_phstart=successSource

Scroll back to page 211, as that's Thomas's entry.

Think you're right. Just a clerk not recording right or perhaps she was known as both?
