I can’t find any military records for William George Thompson son of James and Eliza, who was born in Coventry in 1890. He was serving with 9th Bn Royal Warwickshire Regiment when he was killed in Mesopotamia in 1917 (
https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/630476/william-george-thompson/
).
I suspect that his records may have been among the burnt documents which didn’t survive. I have looked on FindMyPast but the only William Thompson isn’t him (and although this William Thompson is supposed to have a Coventry connection I can’t see it in the record
). I just wonder if anyone might have access to something else.

Thanks, yes I have his CWGC details, it’s just his service info (such as date joining army etc) that I don’t have.

You can read about the action on 25 January 1917 here:

52 men of the regiment were killed that day.

His service number was 16641. Looking at other soldiers of the regiment with similar numbers, 16643 and 16646 enlisted in February 1916. 16639, 16647 and 16649 enlisted in December 1915.
