Baptisms of Harrisons at Devizes c 1775
« on: Friday 09 September 05 05:57 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the baptism of a Lucy Harrison about the year 1775 who married John Latter Woodhams 1804 in Hastings Sussex, no mention of her in that parish, I have obtained a will for a  Peter Gundry who married a Mary Ann Woodhams in 1828 at Hastings, I believe Mary Ann was a daughter of John Latter Woodhams and Lucy, Peter was born in Devizes 1807 and I believe buried there in 1846 with his wife who died 1845, In Peters will he mentions Ann Harrison and also a Henry Fuller Harrison, This Henry was born c 1812 at Devizes and in 1881 living in Hastings and I am wondering, hoping would be a better word that Lucy was a generation before Henry as it seems to me to be more than a coincidence all these connections.
Thank you Dennis

Hi,

I have checked tha baptisms for Devizes, St Mary's for Gundry with no result

In the records for Devizes, Southbroom, St James, there were the following records of interest to you with the Gundry surname.

Gundry baptism dates

Mary Hinckley 3 April 1808 daughter of Peter and Mary

Peter 10 July 1808 son of Peter and Mary, born 6 March 1807

Samuel 18 Jun 1809 son of Peter and Mary, born May 27

Sarah 27 Jan 1811 daughter of Peter and Mary

Richard 6 Sept 1812 son of Peter and Mary

William Richardson 24 July 1814 son of Peter and Mary, grocer

John Sawyer 26 May 1816 son of Peter and Mary, grocer

Mary Ann 8 Mar 1818 daughter of Peter and Mary, grocer

George 11 Aug 1820 son of Peter and Mary, grocer

Jane 25 May 1823 daughter of Peter and Mary, grocer

For the Harrison name there were many entries in the St Mary's register, but no Lucy

In the Southbroom St James, Devizes baptisms there were only these entries

Harrison Baptisms

Jane 22 Mar 1813 daughter of James and Jane, stone mason

John 28 May 1815 son of James and Sarah, stone mason

Lucy 14 Feb 1819 daughter of James and Sarah, stone mason

Hope this helps in some way

Many thanks for your reply, I still have this internal feeling that Lucy has some birth connection with Devizes. Today I received Lucy's death certificate she died 13 Jan 1852 at Belle View Lunatic Asylum Devizes aged 66 cause of death Natural Decay widow of Woodhams of Hastings.
The informant for Lucy's husband John Latter Woodhams death was Henry Fuller Harrison ( what they were doing in Pimlico London in 1849 I haven't a clue ) according to the 1881 census when the said Henry was living in Eastbourne he gave his DOB as 1812 his POB as Devizes.
Very intriguing,
Dennis

Hi,

Henry could still have been born in Devizes.  I don't have access to the St John's parish records from Devizes (and I am not sure how large a parish that is) he could have been born there.
