Henry Asher and Sarah Britton/Breton - New York - Missing Marriage
« on: Sunday 16 July 23 14:06 BST (UK) »
Henry arrived in New York on the Hibernia on 13 July 1867 and Sarah arrived on the same ship on 7 October 1867, both sailing from Glasgow.

They were both born in Glasgow and Henry was working as a Druggist (a profession he held for life).  I think Henry has added a few years to his age as he says he was 27 but he was actually 18 (born June 1849, son of Philip and Hanna).  Sarah was 19 (daughter of Martin and Janet) and her age is roundly correct on the ship manifest.

I cannot find their marriage just to check to see if they are right people (if parents are named etc on the certificate).

I am fairly sure that they are as the 1900 census records them arriving 1866 (a year off but you could probably allow them that!)  Henry also corrects his age on the census'.

The kids recorded with them on the census returns are called after their grandparents, aunties, uncles etc (Rebecca, Philip, Asher, Hannah, Lucy to name but a few and one of the sons has the maternal maiden name as his middle name - Neilson)

The Ashers were Jewish but I don't know what religion the Britton/Breton's were.

Thank you  :)

Where were they in 1900? The surname was Asher but you said there was a son called Asher in 1900?

I found this Henry Asher, born c1849 in Scotland, in 1900 census with wife Sarah but children called Henry, Edward, Louis, Charles.

Submitted family tree-

The family I found in 1900 seems to match.

Hi

Yes that family is the right one - in 1900 they were in Decatur Street, Brooklyn with the youngest 4 kids.  The quoted names were the family ones 'borrowed' from the aunties, uncles etc.  Apologies, I wasn't clear.  The older kids are with them in 1880 at 4 Jacob Street, Brooklyn. (I've lost them in 1892 but I note the tree on FS has them)

One of the kids was called Asher Asher after his paternal uncle.

Henry's DC: https://a860-historicalvitalrecords.nyc.gov/view/4773148

Just had a look at the death certificates and I never realised that NY resource existed!  That's hopefully going to help me with Henry's brother William who also ended up in NY too as his family set up is a bit confusing as I am not sure if his oldest child was actually a step child.   Hopefully the kids birth certificate is on there!

I've also BC's for Henry and Sarah's children too - thank you again!  ;D

In case you have difficulty finding anything there, this page https://a860-historicalvitalrecords.nyc.gov/digital-vital-records shows what's online currently for births/deaths/marriages.  They are supposed to be adding more periodically as time goes on.  Some of the ones that aren't on there have transcriptions on familysearch.org and can be seen at Family Search centers.

Compliance with vital registration was spotty in the early years, so that might be why Henry & Sarah's marriage is not showing up.
