Canadian military records
« on: Thursday 27 July 23 14:59 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know how we can search Canadian military records when not a Canadian citizen. We believe great grandad ( a British home child who arrived in Canada in 1920) was in uk during ww2 but cannot find any trace of him on 21 or 31 census or leaving/ returning Canada. ATip form seems to be for CA citizens only

Hi Lesley and welcome to RootsChat, I can't help with your query but this will bring your post back up the board for the attention of people who are in different time zones.
Good Luck.

Hello and a warm welcome to RootsChat.

Someone may correct me but I believe ATIP is only available to Canadian citizens (as you mentioned), plus permanent residents or people residing in Canada. It doesn’t look like there is any other way to access the records. If you aren’t in Canada you could try email or a letter to the ATIP branch and explain what you are looking for. You never know what might happen. Info can be found in the ATIP section (couldn’t get it to copy and paste properly for me).

Meanwhile, if you would like to give some onfo about your great granddad we could try and find him in the censuses, etc.

Welcome to RootsChat

If you would like to share the name of your great grandad, we could try to help you find him either on census or thru voters lists at a later date.

What date did he arrive as a British Home Child in 1920, the 1921 Canadian Census was 1 st June

Just wanted to mention that Lesley4875 is looking for records from the 2nd World War. Their granddad would not have been old enough to serve in WW1. WW2 records apparently aren’t available on line unless the military person was killed while serving in the conflict.

Hi all thanks for these. We have found who I believe may be our G grandad now on 1931 Canadian census and he then appears in employment records in 1949 but in order to confirm we have the right man we need to find out if he was in Canadian military early ww2 … as this is the only confirmed fact we have . We had a photo ( now lost) with him in uniform in uk with our grandad. The confirmation or otherwise that this chap was indeed in military would be the piece in the jigsaw to know we have the right chap

You haven't identified the name of your great-grandfather, but as a Canadian citizen, I can apply for the records you are looking for.
