Search for Sarah Bettles' application for an order of affiliation
« on: Sunday 30 July 23 19:13 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I have found an article in the Bucks Herald dated August 30, 1851, entitled Bucks Police - Mechanics' Institute, Slough.-Tuesday, August 26. It is the decision made for Henry Denyer of Staines to pay Sarah Bettles 2s per week and 19s costs. Mr. Horne appeared for Mr. Denyer, the defendant. Is there any way I can get a copy of the actual case/hearing? I am hoping to find more specific data regarding Sarah Bettles and her child, etc. I would appreciate any guidance or suggestions on where to look. Thanks much,
Jenn

Welcome to RootsChat!

If any of the records survive they will be at Bucks Archives, but a search of their online catalogue doesn't look encouraging for 1851.

Your best best will probably be to email the archives and ask if they have anything. This sort of general query about their holdings is normally answered free of charge.

If you don't have any luck with Bucks Archives, you might want to consider this person:

Sarah Bettles baptism at Uxbridge 25 May 1828 d/o Thomas and Harriet
address: Hillingdon
father's occupation: shoemaker

Thomas and Harriet also have a daughter Maria baptised at Uxbridge in 6 January 1822.

1841 census has a Thomas Bettles (Ancestry transcribes as 'Bettler') shoemaker aged 40 living in Langley Marish, Buckinghamshire.  With him are Maria aged 20 and Sarah aged 14. None are born in Buckinghamshire.

In 1851 I can only find Maria, who married John Beacham (transcribed 'Bentcham').

Probably not the same Sarah Bettles, in 1861, in Langley Marish there is a Sarah Bettles (transcribed 'Bittles') aged 30, widow born Wexham, Buckinghamshire.

With her is Henry Bettles, nephew, aged 10, born Staines, Middlesex.

The GRO index does not show a Henry Bettles registered in Staines district for 1850/51.  However there is a Henry Charles Bettles registered in Clerkenwell district March quarter 1851, no mother's maiden name given, which would mean that she was unmarried.

Sarah Bettles aged 31 d/o Thomas Bettles, shoemaker married William George Beech in Fulham 23 January 1860.
This couple appear in Fulham in 1861. Sarah Beech's birthplace is Uxbridge.

In 1871 the Beech family are in Paddington. With them is Henry C Bettles, nephew, aged 19, born in Staines, Middlesex.

Henry Charles Bettles married Mary Ann Styles in Paddington 24 August 1873.  He names his father as Thomas Bettles, shoemaker (it isn't unusual for an illegitimate child to name their maternal grandfather as their father in the marriage register).

Thank you so much for your thorough response. I really do appreciate it and will continue my search by going through each of these records. Do you think the application was made in Slough, Bucks because Sarah Bettles lived there or was it because it was the nearest court that could hear her petition/application?

By the way, I did hear back from the Buckinghamshire Archives this morning and they said, unfortunately, no records prior to 1880 had survived.

Again, thank you.
Jenn  :)

The mother would have been living within the boundary of the Slough Petty Sessional division when she made her application. That division may not have been wholly in Bucks, because Slough is so close to Middlesex and Berks. Again, the archives may be able to help as regards the exact location of the boundary at the relevant date.
