Which Judith Tempest?
« on: Monday 31 July 23 14:00 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate some help with this conundrum.

Jude Tempest married Samuel Wright in Duffield on 25th May 1780.
Judith Tempest married Ralph Baggaley in Duffield on 9th July 1781.

The only christening record I can trace is for Judy Tempest, daughter of William and Anne on 5th July 1762 but family trees are divided as to which Jude/ith is the daughter of William and Anne.

I am from the Tempest-Baggaley line but I am not sure where to go with my Tempest ancestry.

Jude Tempest married Samuel Wright in Duffield on 25th May 1780.

Samuel Wright of Twyford, farmer, married Judith Tempest by licence. Witnesses were Elizabeth Parsons and Michael Tempest. The marriage licence states that Judith is from Duffield and above 21, i.e. born 1759 or before.

Judith Tempest married Ralph Baggaley in Duffield on 9th July 1781.

Ralph Baggaley of Duffield, butcher, married Judith Tempest by licence. Witnesses were Elizabeth Tempest and William Tolland. Judith was 19 (born c.1762) and married by the consent of her father William. William was a farmer residing at Burley Hill.

As further confirmation, William's will of 1818 (available to view on FindMyPast) names Judith Baggaley as his daughter.

Matching burial at Duffield gives William an estimated year of birth of 1737.

I would also like to add that FindMyPast has very good coverage for Derbyshire (wills, marriage licences); it is rather expensive, but some libraries offer free access.

Thank you for the detailed information which would confirm I was correct in having William as Judith's father. They seem to have repeated names through each generation which can be confusing to follow. I have already found a John Tempest b 1850 ascribed to the wrong parents.

In the same way I couldn't identify the Tempest witnesses for each marriage. For example Judith, daughter of William, did not have a sister Elizabeth so I am not sure of the connection there. Which Michael was a witness to Jude's marriage?

I am not sure why I can't trace Jude Tempest's birth as the records for Duffield seem complete. I did note that her children's christening records were in a non conformist Presbyterian church.
Unless I can be certain of her parents I an reluctant to correct family trees which have her as the daughter of William.

The Tempest family seem to have left wills through several generations so I think I will have to look at these.

Still many questions but thank you again for your help.

Elizabeth Tempest, witness, may not be a sister and could be a Sister in Law, Aunt or Cousin..

Did Judith have a Brother John?

Elizabeth WEBSTER married John TEMPEST 30 Jun 1780

Hi, yes Judith had a brother John b 1765 who married Ann Longden/Longdon.

The John Tempest who married Elizabeth Webster is the one which confuses people. He was born to John Tempest and his 3rd wife Sarah Salt in 1750 and was William's cousin.
