Hello,
        Do the letters KGN after a soldiers name signify that he was a gunner in the Kings Liverpool Regiment? All help and advice much appreciated.

As far as I can ascertain it is an abbreviation for 'kingsman' - the lowest rank in the British Army in some regiments, instead of private.  The Duke of Lancaster's regiment is one of them, and this traition was inherited from the first the King's Regiment, which in turn took it from the King's Regiment (Liverpool).

Thank you Little Nell. That makes a lot more sense than 'Gunner', which I believe is often shortened to  Gnr or similar.
