Title / landlord
« on: Tuesday 08 August 23 00:08 BST (UK) »
is there a standard way to check title of property in the UK, specifically London for the 1st raft of enquiries. I have a lot of licensed victuallers in the tree & I'd like to know who their landlords were, or if the managed to acquire freehold?

As an example, The Elephant, Kingsland High St. From about 1870 - 1895 it was *run* by Todds, but who owned it?

tia, cheers

The obvious answer is to use The Land Registry (landregistry.uk).

Or take a look at https://www.closedpubs.co.uk/london.html

Run by the Todd family from c1871 to c1897.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Brewerypedia (fully searchable) has extensive pub listings by brewery but I don't see the Elephant there.

Benjamin Pain Todd was doing his own bottling in the 1870s and advertising beer from various breweries by mail order.

Looks like the Todds may have owned the Elephant:

thanks all; those newspaper searches are quite something!

I know they were there; it's the ownership I was/am curious about. Lots of ideas here, thx
