Jarvis Guest,97th Foot Soldier. Aldershot Burial.
« on: Tuesday 08 August 23 20:59 BST (UK) »
Hi, I have been searching the GRO Index for the death Certificate of a Jarvis Guest age 18. His burial is recorded at Aldershot military cemetery on 09 Jan 1869, whilst serving as a 97th Foot soldier. Could anyone please tell me of any reason a death certificate would be unavailable / not issued ?

Thankyou

Good Morning,
After trying all the different spellings of his name I could think of, and looking into his family background, for inspiration, I can't find him either.
Thoughts I've had are;
who would be responsible for registering the death, family or the army?
would his death have been registered locally or through regimental headquarters?
 has the Registration Area changed?
The other people on the page don't appear to have had their deaths registered in Aldershot either.
Stefan
PS The Registration Districts have changed. Also, where did he die?

Hello Phantomfixer,
Am I right in thinking his family were in Portsea?
I know this is a long stretch but I found these GRO entries:

Death Q1/1868 Portsea Island
Unknown age not known (page 276)

Death Q1/1869 Portsea Island
Unknown age not known (page 286)

"morb. val. cord."

Not sure about the "val" bit but morbus cordis is heart disease.

US Navy reports on causes of death in the 19th century include a few cases of "Morbi.val. cordis"

He was born in Lincoln in late 1849 or more likely January 1850 and baptised at St Benedict, Lincoln on 31 Jan 1850. His Parents were William, a sail maker, and Elizabeth Ann (nee Stearling) Guest. In 1851 the family were in Portsea living at 10 Butcher Street with William now shown as the sailor. Jarvis had 3 older brothers and an old sister.
This makes the Portsea death registration highly likely to be the correct one. Clearly if the age in the burial register is correct, Jarvis must have been born between 10 Jan and 30 Jan

The 97th Regt had been stationed in Portsmouth until May 1868 when they moved to Aldershot. It seems likely that Jarvis joined up while the regiment was in Portsmouth.

Added: 1861 census. William Guest age 47seaman widower is at 5 Vicar Row Portsea along with 3 of his sons including Jarvis aged 11.

(I'm assuming that the OP has already got this early information. This is just to strengthen Stefan's find of the death registration.)
