TURNBULLS OF LILLIESLEAF
« on: Saturday 12 August 23 00:22 BST (UK) »
Hello from New Zealand. I have very little information about the descendants of my Mum Nora Agnes Turnbull (b. 1917) originally from Lilliesleaf, Scotland. She was the only child of her unmarried mother Agnes, and spent much of her childhood with her much loved grandparents in Lilliesleaf. We have absolutely no idea who her father was 😪 I think her grandfather was a mail delivery man in the Borders. We are visiting Scotland next year and I'm hoping to have a little more knowledge before then. Many thanks to anyone who can help. X

Have you obtained the relevant certificates and census images from scotlandspeople?

It is free to register and search, you buy credits to download images.
These will give you addresses to locate on your trip.

Thank you so much. No I haven't, but I will now! I'm a complete newbie to this research. Cheers.

Hello Wormiston and welcome to RootsChat.

It looks like this may be the family in 1901 (based on grandfather's occupation) at High St Lilliesleaf:

James Turnbull    57    Head   (born Cavers, mail contractor)
Agnes Turnbull        44    Wife     Duns
Andrew Turnbull        1    Son      Ancrum
Agnes Turnbull       10    Daughter  Lilliesleaf
George Turnbull       9    Son
Ellen Turnbull           6    Daughter
Jamima Turnbull      4    Daughter
Walter J Turnbull      2    Son

and in 1891 at High St Lilliesleaf:
James Turnbull    45    Head   (born Cavers, mail contractor)
Agnes Turnbull         34    Wife     Berwick
Margaret Turnbull       9    Daughter  Jedburgh
Elizabeth Turnbull      7    Daughter  Jedburgh
Andrew Turnbull        2    Son       Ancrum
Agnes Turnbull          4 Mo    Daughter  Lilliesleaf

So possible birth for Agnes TURNBULL at Lilliesleaf - in 1890 (795/8) mmn DARRIE (from Scotlandspeople)

James TURNBULL married Agnes DARRIE 1881 (803/3) registered at Roxburgh.

This confirms the above.

Nora Agnes Turnbull's birth registration is on the SP site posted, she appears as Nora age 4 on the 1921 census, there is also Agnes age 30, I presume her mother.
Also Agnes 65, her grandmother?
It looks like the only other is George 28 but you would need to see the census on SP.
On the 1911 census in Lilliesleaf Agnes 20 is present together with a James 65 but not Agnes senior but that will need to be checked. Below looks like Nora’s mother born 1890 and her parent’s marriage. I hope this gives you a start in your search.

TURNBULL   AGNES   MOTHER DARRIE   F   1890   795 / 8   LILLIESLEAF

JAMES TURNBULL   MARRIED      AGNES DARRIE   1881   803 / 3   ROXBURGH

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Oh thanks so much everyone, I am really thrilled to receive this information. So many great aunts and uncles I didn't know about! I am looking forward to delving some more. It's just sad that my maternal grandfather will remain a mystery. My grandmother took that wee secret with her. Thanks again to all. Bedtime here downunder  but tomorrow's another day of discovery. 🙂

Hi
You've all done a great job!
But in case you don't have it -there's a photo on Ancestry trees of the three generations Agnes Nora and Agnes
https://www.ancestrylibraryedition.co.uk/mediaui-viewer/tree/117960832/person/182408392243/media/1e361b0c-9391-474d-8402-edfcbac2dba3

It seems a shame to miss it
