Mary Olive of Bolton?
« on: Sunday 20 August 23 17:37 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am researching my 3x ggm, Mary Olive, who was born in Bolton (possibly Sharples) in abt. 1847 (estimated dates of birth from censuses vary from 1844 to 1850). She was a housekeeper and living at 54 Lum St. Bolton in 1911, with her daughter, Sarah Jane Curley (née Olive, b. 1884), son in law and grandsons. She was single and had two (living) children. I found her in the previous census living with her daughter and a boarder in the same house. I think Mary was a boarder in different households in the 1871 and 1881 censuses with a son (who must be the first child mentioned in 1911) called Edwin Olive born in Scarborough, Yorkshire in 1870. There obviously won't be any marriage records, so I won't be able to find her father's name and occupation, and I have looked at parish records and birth reg and can only rule out a few of the (many!) Mary Olives born around her time in Bolton, and can't find any for Sharples...

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated as always :)

P.S.: How common was it for unmarried working class women to have multiple children at that time and how would that have been seen by the people around them?

Possible death?
March 1918 Bolton 8c 358
Olive, Mary
Age 71

Burial at Tonge Cemetery, 2 Feb 1918
Mary Olive
Spinster
71 years
Death occurred Fishpool Institution
Consecrated ground
Notes - Darbishire Street

Theoretically(!), as Mary died a spinster, her death cert could have her father's name on it.
She is not young however, and it would need a family member who knew his name to be the informant. As it's a workhouse or infirmary death, probably even less likely.

Thank you!
It would make sense that she could have died in a workhouse as I think her daughter died in 1914 and her grandsons moved to Oldham at some point (so their father could have been with them) which would leave Mary on her own

I think it is more likely that this is who I am looking for as I found the mmn Horrocks Mary (Mary Ann) marrying a Joseph Openshaw in 1889
That would also (kind of!) work with the fact that she said her birthplace was Sharples in 1871 census as it isn't far from Breightmet...
Thank you!
