William Shackleton 1591 coiner
« on: Saturday 26 August 23 13:51 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I wondered if anyone might be able to help please?
I am trying to find out about a Justyniyan Rogers d 1551 Cornhill, Middlesex, London to figure out my Oxfordshire Busby family tree.

He had been left property in Oxford by Richard Busby of Great Tew in Richard's 1539 will and property at Cornhill in Thomas Pymme's will of 1549. Thomas Pymme worked in the exchequer and married Elizabeth, widow of John Busby of Burford d. 1530 (Richard Busby of Great Tew was an exec of John's Burford will). Thomas Pymme mentions a cousin Jone or Jane Busby in his will and also John Busby & Elizabeth's son Richard Busby of Islington (I can't find anything further about Richard Busby of Islington). I also don't know what Elizabeth's maiden name was. Could it have been Rogers?

Although Justyniyan was a Grocer he was allowed to rent property at the Drapers Hall in 1540. The Busby family farmed sheep and some were drapers but I can't find any links with the Busby family in this transaction. He rented premesis 6b Austin Friers.

There are not many records and he didn't leave a will (that I could find) so I am searching the wider family to get some clues.

Justyniyan's wife (possibly 2nd as I am wondering if a first or his mother was a Busby) was Anne/Agnes Hayward, sister of Sir Rowland Haywood 1520-1593 2 x mayor of London and alderman and daughter of George Hayward and Mary Whitbrooke of Salop.

They had a son Rowland Rogers 1550-1573. In his will he leaves everything to his mother Anne Shackleton wife of William and his uncle Sir Rowland Hayward is an exec. Whitebrookes are witnesses tying the family names together.

In 1554 she married William Shackleton at Cornhill. They had Children :
(Boyd's Inhabitants of London)
➡️Gawin 1560
➡️Martha 1561-1631 m 1st Sir William Webb d. 1602, issue includes Gresham Webb 1578-1633, he is a witness to Agnes/Anne Shackleton's 1607 will. 2nd Sir John Baker d 1605. Martha Baker is exec of mother Agnes/Anne Shackleton' 1607 will.
➡️Still born 1563
➡️Elizabeth 1576-1583
➡️Susan 1577-1578
➡️Robert 1578-1603
➡️Susan 1580- m. 1st Thomas Tic or Tie. m. 2nd Cordell Saville 1546-1615  son of Sir Henry Saville of Lupset, high Sheriff of Yorkshire and Joan Vernon. Pedegree = Royal College of Arms and Yorkshire Archaeological Journal Vol 25 pg 21. They have a son Cordell Savell of Clerkenwell (visitation 1623) who married Katherine Hunings dau of Edward and had issue. Susan and her son Cordell are mentioned in Anne/Agnes Shackleton's will.
➡️Joyce 1583-
➡️James 1586-
➡️Chidock 1589-
I can find no further records for Gawin, Joyce, James or Chidock. I am wondering if perhaps the family were Catholic, perhaps Chidock was named for the Chideock martyrs?

It is also possible that a scandle involving William Shackleton resulted in the death of his sons or his/their obliteration from the records.

When looking at other trees on ancestry I found an image of a page in a book but can't find the source (if anyone can help with this I would be very grateful)

It says:
Pg 505, At the Court of Cowdry 20th Aug 1591 - that William Shackleton goldsmith of London has been apprehended and imprisoned at Winchester Castle and the Lords Treasurer, Admiral Chamberlain + Lord Derbie, Lord Backhurst & Sir Robert Cecil want him sent back to London for questioning.
I can only imagine what questioning by Sir Robert Cecil ment.

Sir Rowland Haywood's will mentions relations in common with his sister's will eg Pillsworth and others but his will omits and mention of Shackleton or any of his married nieces or nephews.

Was William executed? I can't find his burial or any other mention of him after 1591.

I can't work out how the Rogers and Busbys are linked.

If anyone knows the book that the William Shackleton case was mentioned in, or if anyone can shed any light on and of the questions above I would be hugely grateful.

Thanks for reading this.

Best wishes
Emma

It appears to have come from Acts of the Privy Council of England, Volume 21, 1591:
