Ayrshire - Alexander Logan graduated 1777 - surgeon or medical in Ayrshire

Does anyone have any idea where i could find out more about Alexander Logan who I think was working in the Ayrshire area possibly near Dalmellington - he graduated 1777.  I am trying to find out if he is related to my Logan line.

Although he may have been working in Ayrshire that doesn’t necessarily mean he was born there.  Is your Logan line exclusively Ayrshire?

Scotlands People has 3 births for an Alexander Logan between 1745 & 1755  - but not in Ayrshire.

Where did you get the info from re his 1777 graduation?  Any more info available?

The Scottish universities, generally, would record the name of a student's father, so in order to find out anything about your Alexander Logan, you need to tell us which university he graduated from.

In the 1770s there were just seven universities in Britain - five* in Scotland and two in England.

The University of Glasgow used to have a useful list of its graduates online, but it seems to have disappeared.

University of Aberdeen graduates are listed in a set of books which are readily available in libraries, and have been partly digitised.

The Universities of St Andrews and Edinburgh have not, as far as I know, published similar lists.

Your best plan would be to contact the Archives of whichever university Alexander Logan graduated from.

If he graduated 1777 he presumably was born in 1740's or 50's but the advance search facility shows no matches for anybody with that surname in the age range

Just a wee thought about the origin of surnames, often after places .... part of Cumnock is called Logan, just on the right as you leave the town heading east towards Edinburgh.  From Logan head south to Afton Bridgend / New Cumnock and take the right fork over the winding hills to Dalmellington.

Just a further thought ... the Logans I know from Ardrossan originated from the Isle of Islay so their surname probably has a Gaelic origin.

If you manage to make a connection to them the Logans of Logan and the Logans of Camlarg are included in Paterson's History of Ayrshire. I had a look this morning but couldn't see a likely candidate though there were brothers mentioned who may have had offspring.
