Jus to add
This looks interesting

Hawthorn Bank 1861
Ann Hosier domestic worker 56 Edinburgh
Ann Stevenson daughter 35
Mary Hosier 30 dom servant
Janet Hosier 28 dressmaker
MARY JOHNSTON grandchild 17 Edinburgh St Cuthbert
William Stevenson 6 grandson
Elizabeth Stevenson 13 grandchild.

So same street she was living in in 1851 with grandfather Archie ,now with a grandmother Ann Hosier. If she's your Mary Sivess Johnston then perhaps William was her stepfather and Mr Hosier was her birth father?

You’re a great detective. I will have to research further. I would never have found this! Thank you.

In reply to Colin
Mary was the daughter of Helen Sives (possibly James’ sister) who married William Johnston. Mary was born 2 years prior to this marriage.

So I guess you are saying the 1848 marriage is not the one?

The St Cuthbert's marriage registers did normally include the bride's father's details. Her father is showing as Archibald.

Added: Sorry ciderdrinker...just seen you had posted the confirmation on Helen's father's name being Archibald in an earlier post  ;)

Hi Colin, Yes this could be the correct Helen and William. Although their marriage is after Mary’s birth, as you say William may be her stepfather.

This is the family of Helen Sivess in 1841 (Helen is not with them)

(Helen Jackson is a cousin - daughter of Archibald's sister, Catherine)

Father Archibald bapt 13/09/1791 Dirleton son of John Sives and Helen Gourlay
Archibald married Mary Welsh in 1817 Canongate

There are a couple of possibilities for Helen in the 1841 census. This one seems more likely.

I have been trying to make sense of this family. First I think the surname is more likely to be HOSIE (see SP census index). I think Ann Hosie here in 1861 was Ann Steven, nee Stewart.

I think this is the same family in 1841
Ann Steven(son) 1841 census
https://www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/5a151e23f4040b9d6e2a78c5/ann-steven-1841-midlothian-st-cuthbert-s-1824-?locale=en

William Steven and Ann Stewart married 1821 Edinburgh
Numerous daughters born between 1822 and 1836 but only 1 son. ( A couple of the children I can see emigrated to Canada between 1851 and 1861 census)
-   Son William Cowan Steven born 1827 Edinburgh – but I suspect he died in 1830.
Husband William must have died or deserted before 1841 census

Then did Ann Stewart partner (I can’t see a marriage) with someone called Hosie? And is the connection to Mary Johnston (grandchild in 1861 census) through the Hosie family ?
I am still puzzled.
