I would still be interested in knowing whether George was ever on the stage.

BNAQ/FindMyPast newspapers include "The Era" and "The Stage".

Checking BNA, The Stage, 5 Jan 1905, has an article about the opening of a play based on Lord Lytton's "The Coming Race". Playing the part of "Zuron" is a George Pownall. You might want to check if it was a child's role?

The Stage, 4 Dec 1930, in an item headed "The Stage Letter Box", lists a George H Pownall.

As already explained access to the snippets are free on BNA but requires subscription to view original (which, in these cases, wouldn't add to the snippet info).

So, there is a "George Pownall" treading the boards in the period you are interested in - but is he "your" George?

This is confusing.

George Henry Pownall
Born 1896 - Battersea, London
Died 1974 - Colesbourne, Gloucestershire
Believed in 1931 he described himself as an Actor living in Bryn Avon, Llandrindod Wells, County Radnor.  In 1936 he was using the stage name George Henry Astor and was touring musical halls and cinemas with a cabaret act

Are you not sure this is your George?

In the 1880s and 1890s there are quite a lot of newspaper references to G E Pownall as an amateur actor.  Haven't spotting anything for him in professional theatre.

Hi Heywood
Sorry if confusing
The initial information was given to me as hearsay and I am trying to establish whether it is correct or not. The post after your one states that there are a few cuttings for G E Pownall. The dates are earlier than the bith of G H Pownall so perhaps the hearsay related to his father GEP.

Hi Drosybont
The dates could relate to George Henry's father George Emerson Pownall. I need to look further into this one. Thank you.
