Hermann August KNIGGE 1879-1959
« on: Sunday 08 October 23 09:59 BST (UK) »
Can anyone find a marriage for Herman to an Ethel before 1905. Nothing showing up on NZBDM anywhere.

There was a daughter Ivy born March 1905 and who died in May 1905 in Auckland. Ethel died in October 1905 in Auckland. Both buried at Waikumete.

Thanks
Ian C

Looks like she may have been born C1881.

On 17/12/1902 a Mr & Mrs Knigge travelled from Sydney to Wellington on the Warrimoo. They are shown as German. There are a couple of other Germans immediately below them on the register.  While Ethel is not a very Germanic name and this may be the brother it might be worth looking at

Not having much luck finding a marriage. Herman appears on the 1902 electoral roll at Brunswick Restaurant with his mother Alvine. The restaurant was sold in 1904

A case involving Herman (a cook) a couple of months earlier:

Herman (a cook) appears to be alone in the 1905/6 electoral roll in Collingwood St.

Death notice for daughter Ivy (of Summer St, Ponsonby):

Thanks Shanreagh.
The passengers would have been Charles/Karl KNIGGE, Hermann's uncle. He travelled back and forth to Sydney for a number of years before returning to Germany after 1911.

Karl had a son August Hermann, which gets a bit confusing.

Thanks Maddy.

Hermann August's father was Karl Hermann married to Alvine, known as Hermann, so items 2 and 3 could be either. The father was a cook at some stage as well.

Hermann snr divorced Alvine in the 1890s. He stayed in Wellington but she moved to Auckland to where son Hermann was.

Alvine, hence one of the names of little Ivy born to Ethel being Alvina.

Looking at the death notice for Ivy, I notice it says "Wellington papers please copy". Are there any KNIGGEs in Wellington, or is it possible this is where Ethel's family were?
