War of 1812 - what do these war terms mean?
« on: Thursday 12 October 23 17:13 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm doing research for a friend and found her relative was enlisted in the war of 1812. He was from Tyrone in Northern Ireland and emigrated to the US in 1812. I found an enlistment record which says he enlisted in January 1815 in Philadelphia. As you can see from the image, there's lots of info then recorded with a lot of dates but I have no idea what it all means. Can anyone help?

I'm just guessing.  R.R. = Rifleman Regiment, D.R. = Dragoon Regiment, I.R. = Infantry Regiment and SAMR? is an artillery regiment.  Fort Warren was located on Governor's Island in Boston Harbor.

R.R.  Jan. 31/15 - D.R. Capt. J.L. Barton's co. Feb. 16 + I.R. April 30/15: present priv - I.R. Capt. A. Irvine's co. U.S. Art. Oct. 31 Dec. 31/15.  Feb. 29 April 30 + June 30/16. present.  I.R. Aug. 31 + SAMR? Fort Warren Dec. 31/16.  Discharged Aug. 2/16 by procuring as substitute Francis Pemler?  Made artly. [artillery?] after May 17/15.

At any rate, he didn't do much service in the war. The peace treaty was signed in Washington on 17 February 1815 having been previously ratified in London in December 1814.
