Occupation of Boat Ranger
« on: Friday 20 October 23 19:37 BST (UK) »
Hello Everyone -- has anyone ever come across the occupation of 'Boat Ranger' - or 'Canal Bank Ranger' please?

This particular man was seemingly a Boat Ranger/Canal Bank Ranger on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal - I imagine that he may have sailed up and down a section of the canal, looking out for boats in trouble or something like that - but I don't know. I've never heard of this job before.

Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Oh gosh! Well found.

This particular man I am talking about, was a Ranger in 1921 (and before) - but in 1921 he was specific about his area ie, the places. There was about an 8 mile one way trip between these 2 places.

I can't imagine him just doing one backwards and forwards walk each day - but who knows!
That's why I thought he would sail up and down several times daily, but just don't know.

It's not really important, I was just curious. Thank you though for looking - much appreciated.

Grateful thanks ShaunJ - that is a new site to me. I couldn't find it on the old occupation sites I've used previously.

After closing down last night I thought about checking Newspapers for job adverts actually, as years ago - I accidentally came across an advert for 'Scavengers' in a mid 19c advert and discovered it was a bone-fide job for the local Council. That came as a big surprise.

Thank you for your help and for advising me of that particular website.
