I have just found a burial on Ancestry for Anne Getliffe aged 5 buried 20 Dec 1837 at Ashbourne, so clearly I have wasted my money ordering the PDF!

The search goes on!

The 1828-9 Pigot's Directory lists two Getliffes among the tailors in the Ashbourn section:

George Getliffe, Compton
John Getliffe, Dig Street.

No mention of Ann Getliffe.

They are both her sons.

AFAIAW Ann herself never run any shop, they were run by her husband Robert and her two sons John and George. I'm not sure what control she had over the shops run by her sons. The advert comes only days after the death of Robert, I assume that the family didn't want to miss any business and that the sons would have taken on the work, together with their apprentices. What happened to Robert's shop in the long run is another matter.

As Robert's direct heir, Ann clearly had control of his shop. Whether she gave up control to John or George is unknown. Another possibility is the involvement of John Davenport, the husband of Ann's daughter Mary. Davenport was also the executor of Robert's will.

Can't you find a will for Ann Gettliffe in the indexes of Derbyshire wills proved in the Diocese of Lichfield?

Yes, that is the death. There is a matching burial for a 5 y o child, the daughter of Thomas Gettliffe. Congrats on finding it given the spelling. It defeated me to my cost.

I tried Staffordshire wills. There is one for Anne Gettliffe who died in 1849 in Leek, though she was a spinster and so is presumably not the one I seek.

I presume that wills for Ashbourne would come under the Staffordshire Diocese of Lichfield?

Both Staffordshire and Derbyshire came under the Diocese of Lichfield. As far as I know, the original wills are still at Lichfield. They used to have manuscript calendars.  I know many Staffordshire wills were indexed by the BMSGH, but I'm not sure what gives for Derbyshire.

If in doubt, you could always e-mail or phone Lichfield.  There seems to be a good chance of a will or administration, and even finding the latter should be a big step forwards for you

Does anyone know a relevant e-mail address for the relevant department at the Diocese of Lichfield?

I am still open to other ideas for tracing this death.

It seems the Debyshire wills in Lichfield Diocese are now held at Staffordshire Record Office.  Try these contact details:
