Jeremiah Olipher/Oliver of Southdean Roxburghshire
« on: Thursday 07 December 23 15:00 GMT (UK) »
Looking for information relating to Jeremiah who married Mary Newtoun/Newtown
Two dates shown for marriage when researching either on Ancestry or IGI websites
21st and 22nd October 1738 and places listed differs in data sourced
Eckford and Southdean are areas named

Mary Newtoun was daughter of George Newtown and Christian Palmer
Mary was  on 23 November 1712 Eckford

Do have other individuals named Oliver/Olipher/Oliphant listed in tee data either directly or as branch linked by marriage
Some of these individuals lived in Crailing and do have a distant cousin who was born and lived in Crailing until about four years ago

Anything relevant would be much appreciated

Thanks in advance

When bride and groom came from different parishes the banns were read in both places. That accounts for there being two records. The date is likely to be the date the couple "contracted", i.e. told the session clerk they intended to marry, hence the different days. Until you read the original entries, you won't be absolutely certain. You should read both as the detail can vary. They can both be seen on ScotlandPeople:

Jeremiah Olipher & Mary Newtown 21-10-1738 parish of Hownam

Jeremiah Oliver & Mary Newtoun 22-10-1738 parish of Southdean and Abbotrule

Two dates shown for marriage when researching either on Ancestry or IGI websites
Neither of these sites is the original source - they only have index listings.

The reason why there are two dates is that the marriage banns were called in two parishes - Hownam, and Southdean and Abbotsrule.

Original documents are available to view only at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.

Transcriptions of the registers of (so far) a minority of parishes are online at https://www.freereg.org.uk. The transcription above is part of the full text of the latter. FreeREG does not yet have transcriptions of the registers of the parish of Hownam.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
