Family tree help
« on: Friday 15 December 23 17:17 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone

I have been doing my family tree and i wonder how you would find out if a couple had children.
My Grandfather Walter George Griffin was married to my Grandmother Betty Bush and they had my dad.
Walter then remarried to a lady called Gladys Cottrell/Bayliss. The problem is that she had her name changed by depoll from Cottrell to Bayliss and then to Griffin. She died as Gladys Griffin in 1986. I never knew them personally so its been challenging to discover their life.

If you search https://www.freebmd.org.uk/  for births with surname Griffin and mother's maiden name Bayliss, you will find possible entries of children born after the date of Walter and Gladys's marriage. These possible births are not in the same area as the marriage place.  Do you know where Walter lived?
There are two Griffin/Cottrell births registered - but they might be a bit too late to be likely for a marriage in the mid 1960s

Gladys married Walter as Gladys Bayliss, so she might have thought it more appropriate to use that name on any birth registration (I suppose it might depend on the reason for the name change).

There are 4 Gladys Griffin deaths in 1986 - the youngest of which was b 22.3.1919.  The marriage was Sept qtr 1964 so she would have been  45 at that time

That is correct
The one who died in 1986 is the right one born 1919.
She lived in Surrey and Hampshire with Walter. She was 45 when she married but i am curious to if she had children before or after.

Her name change makes any kind of research rather difficult. Plus she was working in the forces most of her life.

She may have lived with somebody called Bayliss but I can't see any Bayliss births with mmn Cottrell between 1939-1963

I know of 3 areas she lived in.
Surrey, Hampshire and Watford.
She married my grandfather in 1964 but by then she was 45. Would it be impossible for her to have kids past this age?

I have had trouble with the Bayliss/Cottrell connection for some time.  But the 1921 census helps me find any of her siblings

45 is not too old if she was healthy but a first pregnancy at that age can have risks.  Any Griffin birth should show mothers maiden Cottrell as that was her birth surname

Yeah i didnt think it was too old but more unlikely as the years go on.

I found 1 name Surrey born 1960. I know Gladys lived in that area around them but unsure if she went by Bayliss or Cottrell at this point
