HOPKINS & BROWNRIGG of Wexford
« on: Tuesday 26 December 23 01:16 GMT (UK) »
There was an “Elizabeth Hopkins of Garryhasten” who married Henry Brownrigg in 1807 at Clonegal.

She died in 1822 at age 41, meaning she was born c1781.

The only Hopkins family living at Garryhasten was that of James Hopkins c1750-1818 so he was in all likelihood her father.  Following her marriage, she resided at Kilrush, Co. Wexford.

Elizabeth is said to have been previously married to a Jacob Brownrigg but this is not reflected in the Clonegal Register.

Can anyone sort this out?

Brownriggs came in both Catholic and Protestant flavors. Which flavor are you inquiring about?

I believe the same is true of Hopkins.

Also, would be very useful if you told us the source(s) of the dates you mention, and details such as where in Kilrush?

Are you looking at Ireland Diocesan And Prerogative Marriage Licence Bonds Indexes 1623-1866?

https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=IRE%2FDIOC%2F007246537%2F00348&parentid=IRE%2FDIOC%2FMAR172642

There is another entry on that page where bride is als (alias) James. And has a note she is a widow.
This makes me think Elizabeth Hopkins is a spinster in this instance.

Why reference a commercial, paywalled site, when the original is freely available online

Hi Wexflyer

You ask for sources of info, where possible.  The RCB’s Online Project has transcribed Parish Registers for St Fiaac’s Church of Ireland, Clonegal and lists the marriage:-

21 May 1807 - Marriage of Henry BROWNRIGG & Elizabeth HOPKINS Garryhastin

See:-

Hi again

Further delving brought up a Family Tree by John Reynolds, showing a Jacob Brownrigg born 1809 to Henry Brownrigg and Elizabeth Hopkins.  See:-
https://gw.geneanet.org/schnapper?lang=en&n=brownrigg&oc=0&p=john

Unfortunately there isn’t a source for this information.

Kilrush is in Co. Wexford to the south of Garryhasten and east of Bunclody.

Yes, I agree that Elizabeth Hopkins of Garryhasten was likely a spinster when she married Brownrigg in 1807 but several people have claimed she had previously been married to a Jacob Brownrigg.

Not sure where this information comes from.
