thats really interesting as she was Florence francis stephens on her obituary, born in india to Henry who was a sargent in the army so theres definitely links.

Still need to find out what happened to clarence, if Florence is a widow in 1911 he cant possibly be paternal fathr, unless shes lied so really need to find what happened to him and if hes still alive in 1911, but the 1903 article is definitely him and now i know he actually existed is something.

Clarence is referred to as an advertising contractor in the first newspaper article and there is this Clarence on the 1901 census in Lambeth
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9CW-PL9

If the D was for Dalgetty then he was in trouble with the law in 1894.

There's also this death reg

Thanks, that would also match her being from Scotland. Just had a quick look at him and see on Scottish residence hes listed as a "traveller" which is a match, ill dig a bit more on him, thankyou.

I wasnt sure the death 1909 was mine as he was recorded as a labourer on his obituary.

I was having a look on ScotlandsPeople for any records of Clarence and then Henfrey bmds and found a birth reg in 1895 and checked details
21 Sept 1895 Clarence Dalgetty Henfrey Stephen illegitimate son of Clarence Dalgetty Stephen, commercial traveller, and Fanny Elizabeth Henfrey, formerly restaurant waitress.
There's also a death reg for him in the same year.
Cornwall: Allen, Bevan, Bosisto, Carnpezzack, Donithorn, Huddy, James, Retallack, Russell, Vincent, Yeoman

thats definitely a match! thankyou

My Grandfather was called clarence stephens b1912 but as she said shes a widow on 1911 census i cant make any connection to whether shes lied about him being the father or being a widow.

At least one untruth in the story!

No birth record or marriage on ScotlandsPeople for Clarence. If he started life as John Watson, there's a few possibles.

There's a Clarence Stephens/Stevens b c1895 with a Manchester connection who seems to regularly be in trouble with the law in the 1920s and 30s in UK and Ireland - housebreaking, bookmaking etc.

just a thought if Clarence Dalgetty Stephen maybe was away in 1911 that lead her to put widow.  Maybe in scotland? Any sign of him under scotland census ? thankyou
