ANNIE COCARILL nee SPURRELL b. circa 1887 Trinity NFLD
« on: Sunday 14 January 24 19:09 GMT (UK) »
Hi All
So, digging for early records in Newfoundland is like looking for Protestant records in Ireland!
It is a slog and I could use some help!
I have Annie Spurrell marrying George Cocarill in St. John's Newfoundland in 1908.
No parents listed so I have no idea who Annie's family was (Brick wall #1).
Then George & Annie and their growing family show up on the 1921 Census still in St. John's but under the surname COCHRANE.
Why the name change I have no idea - it is not a slip of the census taker as their grandchildren carry that surname into today (Mystery #1).
Anyway George Cocarill/Cochrane dies in 1928 and his children show up on the 1935 with no mother Annie.
I have been unable to find Annie after his death as a Spurrell or Cocarill/Cochrane (Brick wall #2).
Not sure if any sleuth can pick up something on Annie that I have not been able to find?
Appreciate the help

Sadly found nothing on Annie Spurrell or her parents, tried a few spelling alternatives.
No death for her as Annie Cochrane but could she have remarried, again a brick wall.
Probably no remarriage - Cecil was only 14 and Leslie only 12 years.
Elusive.

Is it possible that Annie died prior to George’s death?

The ages/dates/spelling don’t quite add up but throwing this out there…

1935 census includes a “brother”, age at last birthday was 12 (so he could have been almost 13).

Death index
Cocarell George, place of event: St. John’s, May 8, 1928
Coccarill Elizabeth, place of event: Fortune Bay, October 4, 1921

Could Elizabeth have actually been your Annie?  Was Annie possibly a nickname?  Was there ever a town named Fortune Bay, or were they referring to today’s Fortune Bay?   :-\

Added:  well, your Annie was not Elizabeth.  Elizabeth was age 70, and sadly, drowned.

But, could Annie have passed away prior to George?

It appears that George was buried in General Protestant Cemetery.  Have you tried contacting the cemetery office to see if Annie is buried there as well?

Thanks Lisa
I found her.
Remarried to a widower John Tremblett and she died in 1935.
Married between 1928 &1935
Currently trying to find their marriage and have contacted the Catholic Diocese in St Johns. As it seems she converted probably to marry.
