Hi,
These are the most relevent details from his service record:
Enlisted Paisley 2 Mar 1838 age 18 0 months. Born Irvine, Ayr.
Height 5' 6 3/4" eyes hazel, hair light brown, fresh complexion, occupation labourer.
He served for a total of 12yrs and 52 days*, of which 9 yrs were spent abroad: Malta 4 years 20 days, Jamaica 2 years 12 days and Bermuda 3 years and 291 days (personally I'd count that a nearly 10 years!).
He was discharged 23 Apr 1850 at Chatham on medical grounds after suffering from chronic dysentery for some years, and after spending several weeks in hospital at Chatham immediately prior to being discharged. His age on discharge was given as 30 and his physical description was the same as on enlistment.
You have probably seen his pension records. He was awarded a pension of 8d per day on 28 April 1850 and due to last for 21/2 years, ie due to run out in 1852, but this was extended by one year to 14 June 1853. The pension was issued at Paisley.
*He was only eligible to be paid for 11 years and 335 days as he was not paid while in hospital.
If you send me a pm with your email address I can send you the pages.
