Manchester Electoral Registers
« on: Saturday 27 January 24 16:12 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

As someone who has not visited Manchester for many years could anyone give me an idea of how to access the electoral registers?

I doubt that they would be available on-line so I guess that they are all held at the reference library?

Thanks,
Paul
I lived in Ardwick, Manchester in the early 1960s as a small child and much travelling of the world has now led me to want to know more about my roots. Carter, Beckwith, Connolly, Heron and Kelly are all names that form part of my family tree.

You are in luck - they are online!  And quite a few of them.

They are on FindMyPast!

They are there but only upto 1940. I know for certain that my man was living at the address in 1946 but doesnt appear in any earlier registers.

Back, therefore, to my slightly amended original question. Are the Manchester electoral registers for AFTER 1940 held at the reference library? If so, how do you access them?

The Archives are now at the Central Library.

Thanks. I had hoped they would be on-line but it will mean a first trip back to Manchester for many years.

Good you amended the date there....and just to highlight there were no elections during the war years.  The 1980/90's are in paper form in the reference section on the shelves.

Looking at the Rate books or even directories might also assist you.  FindMyPast are suppose to be digitising Rate books up to the 1950's. Not sure where they are up to with this.
