Attestation Lookup Please, 1879
« on: Tuesday 30 January 24 11:03 GMT (UK) »

Could anyone on here do an Attestation Lookup please?

It’s for William James Wilson, born Shoreditch, who signed up in Cork in September 1879 aged 19 years and 4 months.

I’d like to check which Regiment he went to, and if he gives any details about next of kin, etc.

Cheers, Romilly.

He was in 2nd Battalion the Wiltshire Regiment. There are pages of records some of them very messy and will take som deciphering. He enlisted d in 1/7 Royal Fusiliers and transferred to the Wiltshires.

Many thanks for looking Jebber.

Is the Attestation on Ancestry? I couldn’t see it there?

Just looked again, and it’s Fold 3 on Ancestry; which I don’t have.

I’m convinced that a lot of these Military Records on Ancestry that are now Fold 3, used to be available with ordinary Ancestry Subs! Yet another way of making you pay more, I suppose…

I’m just trying to rule this man out as my paternal grandfather William James Wilson.

If the man who signed up in Cork in 1879 has Father Leonard Wilson, Pawnbroker, then I’ll know it’s not him.

He attested at Bow Police Court London. He was born in Shoreditch and was a labourer.

It says joined at Cork which contradicts Bow.

On transferring to the reserves he gives his intended address as Rothbury Rd Hackney.

There is no mention of his father.

Many thanks Jebber. That must be the man in Shoreditch on the 1861 Census, with Father Leonard Wilson, Assistant Pawnbroker.
