Just looking at Kate for background.

There is a Kate Gray who is a domestic servant in Arnold Notts in 1891.

She is with family in 1871/1881 if that was her and had a sister Rebecca and father George to link the names with her own children.

Kate Gray birth Jun 1869 Chesterfield district - mothers maiden name Dove

Marriage Dec 1864 Chesterfield district - George Gray & Frances Dove

Likely but would need to double check this is the right Kate.

thanks milliepede,

I'm trying to find a GRO reference number for James and Catherine's marriage, just to cut down on the cost of ordering the certificate. I really want to know who his father was and to see if the India birth is true.

Its a shame marriages aren't available as digital images, it would be so much cheaper and faster, without a GRO number it is 15 days for dispatch of a certificate then 2nd class post times, plus the cost is £14 rather than £11 (if GRO number known).

For Catherine i found a baptism on 7th December 1873 at St Peters, Nottingham. Father Edwin Grey (trade - butcher) and his wife Mary Ann.
There is also a birth record for Catherine Gray, Oct - Dec 1873 Vol 7b page 316

I think the Kate Gray you found in the 1891 census is the right one, the greyhound pub on Nottingham road is in Arnold, Nottingham.

James Edward Jackson and Catherine Gray's marriage certificate has been ordered, estimated despatch date 13/02/2024 so hopefully it arrives by the end of next week.

Oh well done for ordering the marriage. Yes it is a shame digital images aren’t available.
Free BMD index gives the reference numbers you need to order certificates as you have probably found.  Please do let us know what it says in due course.

I think that other Catherine Gray with father Edwin married someone else, Fox or Foxwell from memory, but will see what your Kate’s father’s name is when the marriage arrives to know which one she was.

Both James and Catherine seem not to be able to decide where they were born, either way i will solve the mystery. Her father will be one or the other and James's fathers name may help pin down his birth.

Thanks for all the help, of course i will update here as soon as soon as i know something

Definitely making progress.  I wonder if anywhere has the 1897 marriage information to save you getting the certificate......there are some Nottingham marriages online.  Perhaps theirs is somewhere too.

It is a registry office wedding
James Edward Jackson
Catherine Gray
Marriage year 1897
Register Office 685
Reference RO/55/008
Place Basford
