What is likely date of this photo
« on: Friday 23 February 24 10:44 GMT (UK) »
This is a photo found in the effects of my first cousin 3 times removed John McConville (1836-1919) of Drumgath, County Down. He joined the army as a teenager.
There is no name of who it is written on the back. She doesn't look like his wife but could be one of his two sisters born 1844 & 1847.
Can anyone estimate when this photograph was taken from her clothing and hairstyle?
A google image search gives similar styles from the 1860's.
I have been told that it was taken in Belfast though I don't have the original photo therefore don't know the name of the photographer.
Also a rough estimate of her age?

Not an expert, just along to get the ball rolling. My estimate would also be 1860s, about mid-decade.

Regarding her age, sadly someone has smoothed the subject's face, making it impossible to give a good assessment. I'd just say it's feasible she could be one of your cousin's sisters (if our dating is close enough).

Hopefully a more expert contributor will be along shortly.

Well it is not a full crinoline dress,so mid 1800’s at a rough guess.

I find the hair style confusing ,that roll on her forehead but nothing on the sides?

Is the photo clear enough to see if she has a wedding ring on?

She looks a young woman around 20 give or take.

Agree 1860's & as Viktoria has pointed out she's not wearing the full crinoline
which lost favour late decade.
I would suggest 1866-9.
As the 2 sisters are only 3 years apart it's impossible to say which one it is
assuming it's one of them.

Thanks for your help everyone. It looks likely that the photo was taken late 1860's which would be a good fit for the age of John's two sisters.
