Looking for military records
« on: Friday 15 March 24 10:28 GMT (UK) »
Dear all I am trying to find my husband’s father’s military records but don’t know how to find his number and wondered if anyone could tell me where I could find it. He was in the RAF towards the end of the WW2. He died in 1965.
Not sure if I can name him.

You don't need his service number but you will need his date of birth and a copy of his death certificate.

Thanks Shaun

Army required brief details of Service and their Official Proof of Death seems to be mandatory in the upload near the end, along with Date of Birth or Service Number.

We were also asked the year he left.

Different requirements for each service.

For RAF disclosures all that is required is knowledge of Month and Year of Birth and proof of death/presumption of death certificate in jpeg/pdf form.

No requirement for service number.

RN Disclosures different again to Army and RAF.

Ross
Sea Losses of RAF Aircraft 1918 to date.

RAF Coastal Command 1939-45.

Between the Wars RAF Officers and Warrant Officers.

My late relative left the DCLI, Bodmin, and we have a headed, handwritten reference dated 1936 from his CO saying he did Six and half years Service (since emailed letter), but no Service No., was given.

I used a scan of his registered Probate as proof of death and gave his Birth Date stated on the official GRO Death Index.

The Army are not proceeding and gave me the standard complaint procedure referring me to the ICO.
 ---------
I had to apply with his name, the name on his DCLI reference and also known as (aka) _____ his name at death.

However, the Birth date seems to be the problem?

The DCLI Museum at Bodmin can't help with any Service No.
