1901 Census - Lambeth - Question
« on: Sunday 11 September 05 14:58 BST (UK) »
Would anyone with access to the 1901 census be able to look at the image for me and let me know if the following person is listed as a widow please:

RG13/404, Folio 8, Page 7, Household 48

Rose Tilbury, Age 57, Nurse.

I have been unable to find her husband, Henry TILBURY, Age 59.  Rose was a Nurse back in the 1861 census.  After she married Henry, she was only listed as a wife and now I find her Nursing in 1901.  I would appreciate any information on her from the census other than what I have listed above.  Thank you in advance.   :-*

Ooops, M for Married. This transcriber uses Wid for Widow

If you post Henry's details and which census he appears on I'm sure some of us will have a go - unless you have tried this already :-\

Hi Tricia,

Thanks for the offer.  Here is what I know about Henry:

According to the census data that I have, Henry was born about 1842 in Hackney, Middlesex/London.  I do not have any census data prior to 1881 to be able to see if he is living with any family members.  He has always been listed as Henry with the data that I have.  (Not Harry or a possible middle name)

Henry Tilbury & Rosina Jane Attwater were married in 1867 in St Martin district.

I have not been able to locate this couple on the 1871 census.

In 1881, the couple were located in Eltham, Kent.  Henry was a Groom & Rosina, a Laundress. (RG11/728, Folio 73, Page 13)

In 1891, they were in Newington, London where Henry was a Greengrocer and Rosina was a House Wife.  (RG12/357, Folio 118, Page 65)

Although Rose's birth location is incorrect for the 1901 census, the birth year, Age and occupation prior to marriage are correct.

If anyone can find him in the 1901, it would be very much appreciated.  I have a feeling he may be deceased even though Rosina is listed as being married.

Thanks again,
Nancy

Sorry for delay - busy elsewhere.

My first thought is - are you absolutely sure that Rose Tilbury born Chelsea on 1901 is your Rose.

I ask this because there is a Rose Tilbury born 1844 London on the 1891 census also with a husband called Henry Tilbury born 1843 London

I just don't understand why she should change her birthplace from Sittingbourne Kent to Chelsea. It doesn't make sense.

To further confuse you (and myself) and you may have seen this - there is a Rose Tilbury born Sittingbourne Kent on the 1901 census but giving her age as 45 - written quite clearly. This lady is a domestic cook living with a Henry Thorn and family and also recorded as Married. Living in Beckenham kent.

Now this could be her knocking a fair bit from her age - has been done before - maybe to get the job- or a mistake when the transcriber wrote down from the original enumerator's writing. Oh, heck!!
