birth location - Derbyshire or Notts?
« on: Saturday 30 March 24 10:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I'm trying to find the birth record of Mary Smith, father is William who was living in Eckington, Derbyshire on the 1861 census. I don't think the transcription is correct  (I googled it, it doesn't exist) so can any of your guys help me?

John Liveridge is the husband, I should add  :)

"Chreswell, Elmton"

There's an Elmton near Creswell, Derbyshire

That could well be it, I have just gone back one page on the census records and there is a Smith family, Head is William and mother is Ann, from Cuckney which is just along the road from Chreswell.

Thank you!

There is a baptism transcript on FindMyPast for a Mary Smith , parents William, a labourer, and Ann at St Peter,  Elmton & Cresswell on 7 Nov 1841.

You'd need to check this carefully to see if you agree, but Mary's mmn (despite what the GRO says)
was Johnson.
This area came under Worksop District
Marriages Q2 1841 Worksop 15 975 William SMITH - Ann JOHNSON

I went back to the 1851 census, Piece 2122, foio 533, page 37
which has the following children with William & Ann
Sarah 12 (so born prior to the marriage)
Mary 9 (transcribed on Anc as May)
Rebecca 6
Ann 4
Jane 1

I looked at the GRO index entries for these children
Sarah - 1838 Q3 Worksop Union, 15 621 mmn RICHARDSON
Mary - 2 options in 1841 1 with MMN Holmes and 1 mmn '-' which indicates illegitimacy
Rebecca - 2 options 1843 MMN Brammer, 1844 '-'
Ann - 1846 Q4 Worksop 15 652 mmn JOHNSON  (plus 2 others 1847 1-mmn Brammer 1 mmn Holmes
Jane - only 1 possible 1849 Q4 Worksop 15 641, mmn JOHNSON

hmm, I took a punt on the Mary who was billed as being illegitimate
and my gut feeling was right

EDIT that ran away with me

I have reported this to the GRO and in the fullness of time they will amend the entry. I suspect that the Rebecca mmn '-' may well be the same error

As for the eldest girl Sarah,I am wondering if William was a widower when he married Ann in 1841?

Here's a map showing Elmton and Creswell, 1875.  The modern spelling seems to be a single s.  Pronounced locally as z.

Added: It is in Derbyshire.  Worksop is also the modern postal address.  Notts is in SE corner of map - blank.
