William Thomas DOWNHAM, born 20/08/1845, Lambeth
« on: Tuesday 02 April 24 16:59 BST (UK) »
Hello,

He married Naomi Ann PAIN on 10/04/1871 in Kingston upon Thames and according to the wedding documentation his occupation was "Soldier".  I have researched all the appropriate indexes, at least those available to me, and have been unable to unearth any service details   Can anyone help please?

Incidentally, he died in 1879 in Portsea, Hampshire (GRO only), with his widow re-marrying sometime later.

Thank you.

Do you have him in the 1871 census?

Thank you Watson,

A distinct possibility, in fact probably correct.

My only difficulty is that being discharged as "objectionable" in 1868 rather disqualifies him from being a soldier at his wedding in 1871!!

I never came across "objectionable" in my National Service except "dishonourable discharge", although my Company Sergeant Major should have won the title...."very objectionable"!!

Perhaps the description of "soldier" was not up to date.  Or could he have joined again after 1868?
