Shipping record for SS Gilroy
« on: Wednesday 03 April 24 11:14 BST (UK) »
Hello
My 2 times gt grandfather, David Whyte, died in 1867 and was a sailmaker onboard the SS Gilroy. The death certificate has him dying in St Helena but I have looked on line at the death records for St Helena and there is no record there.

I wonder if he died onboard the SS Gilroy while stopped at St Helena for resupply and they buried him at sea.

Can anyone help to where I can go to find where he is buried? If the ships logs exist, where would they be kept.

The SS Gilroy was a steamship ans registered in the port of Dundee. It was owned by the Gilroy brothers a very wealthy jute manufacturer family who branched out into shipping.

Regards
Ann

If I have understood correctly, the linked site describes a vessel built in 1898, but David Whyte died in 1867.

It was the George Gilroy, I think.

The deceased seamen's wages record has the death of David White of the ship Geo.Gilroy at St Helena on 28 August 1867. https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=BMD%2FMTM%2FBT153%2F0007%2F001-212&parentid=BMD%2FD%2FMARITIME%2F667896

Per newspaper reports, the ship left St Helena on 31st August, having put in for repairs on 6th.

Can anyone help to where I can go to find where he is buried? If the ships logs exist, where would they be kept.

For ship GEO GILROY official number 45817 the Ship's Official Logbook is held at the Maritime History Archive in Canada. You need to ask them to check the narrative section for any entry into his death as reported by the Master. They will look it up for you but any copies will be chargeable.

Make sure you give the official number of the ship and the date of his death so they can optimise a search as logbooks are held for a whole year.

Hugh
