WILLIAM TURNER (Convict)
« on: Thursday 04 April 24 01:46 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone
I'm doing research on the above:-

 WILLIAM TURNER:
Convicted for forgery - counterfeiting money
parents possibly from Chelmsford
Convicted at Essex 11 March 1822

Apparently he appears in the below papers?
The Chelmsford Chronical 1822
The Times 1822 (March 13 or 15)

He was on the "Leviathan" hulk in Plymouth before being transported to Tasmania on the "Arab" in 1822.

One record has him born in GRENADA from his indent!!  Not sure if this is correct.

He married a Sarah Waters in Tasmania in 1835 and they had the following children who were all living by 1853 (Sarah's death in Victoria)

GEORGE MEADOWS TURNER, b. 1837

WILLIAM HENRY TURNER, b. 1838, Hobart Town, Tasmania; d. September 11, 1879, Geelong, Victoria.  (NO BIRTH FOUND IN TASMANIA SO FAR)

AMELIA

CHRISTINA

NOAH B 1870 IN Victoria died Temora NSW 1915

I'm just including the children in case these names perhaps appear as parents/grandparent of WILLIAM TURNER.

So if there is any details on a William TURNER b c 1800 in Essex (Chelmford) or any other snippets of information that would be great.  Kind regards and thanks Dianna

Sarah death Victoria, 1853 -

Can you please list all the information on this death certificate.

What documentation do you have for the BDM events in the lives of these people.

Are you descended from  one of these TURNERs?....which one?

Children as you have named -

TURNER George Meadows   b. 1837
TURNER William Henry       b. 1838, Hobart Town Tasmania  d. 11 Sep 1879, Geelong
TURNER Amelia
TURNER Christina
TURNER Noah                    b. 1870 Victoria  died Temora  NSW 1915

Noah's birth year seems to be incorrect. Can you give a birth date reference for him.

Can you please confirm the suggested birth  year you have for Noah.

Here is Sarah's death certificate.  All children are still alive! GEORGE MEADOWS, WILLIAM, AMELIA, CHRISTINA and NOAH.

Noah, the last born is registered in Victoria.

I've spent hours this morning on the Tasmania Archives looking for the childrens births x 4 in Tasmania of Sarah and William with NO LUCK.  Information is from another researcher with no records

The only birth I found was one HARRIET born to Sarah WATTER/WALTERS from the correct ship "Jane" while she was in the Cascade Correctional centre in 1834 prior to her marriage to WILLIAM TURNER in 1835.  Thanks Dianna

Sorry about the mistake with the 1870 birth, that is the next generation.

NOAH TURNER born in Victoria in 1851.  Thanks

The information in the columns of the DC to me indicate-

She has been 9 years in Victoria. So the youngest 2 chn and possibly Amelia too, .....(allowing some flexibility in recollections of the informant) were born in Victoria where she has been for 9 years.

14 in Hobart.

T he 16 year old George MEADOWS was not born in VDL if she has been only 14 years there.

His surname is likely MEADOWS, not a second given name MEADOWS.

She was 25 when she married William so 23 when she had George.

Doesn’t 14 in Hobart + 9 in Victoria mean that George was born after 7 years in Hobart?

Very unskilled reverse twist maths there ::)
