Aldburgh Old Post Office
« on: Friday 05 April 24 15:59 BST (UK) »
Hello, I'm trying to locate the position of the Old Post Office in Aldburgh. I know it is now in the same building as the Co-op and that building was rebuilt after bomb damage in WWII. Does anyone know if it was rebuilt on the site of of the old post office, or was it moved? I have found a photograph of the Old Post Office from 1895, and it looks to me as though it could possibly be the building near the Regatta restaurant. Does anyone know? Link to photo http://britishpostofficearchitects.weebly.com/1895---high-street.html
Thanks for any replies.
Peggy

I have compared other buildings in the old photograph with google streetview and am satisfied the new post office was rebuilt on the site of the old one.

This 1927 OS map shows the Post Office a little to the north of the junction with Crabbe Street, whereas the modern Post Office/Co-op is at that junction. It looks to me as if the old Post Office would be around the position of the modern block where the Sue Ryder shop is.

Here is my attempt to reproduce the postcard view in streetview. Note the double-bayed building across the street from Sue Ryder – that looks like the building behind the awning on the postcard. Buildings further away look right too.
