Gilson/Gibson - Barking Tye, Suffolk
« on: Friday 05 April 24 22:51 BST (UK) »
Evening all,

I'm looking for info of a miller at Barking Tye.  He went by the name of William Gilson or Gibson.  He was there in 1805, along with Barnaby Gilson (father/brother/son?).

Barnaby seems to have remained there till about he died in 1823, and Thomas (son?) took over, till between 1830 & 1841.

Any early (pre-1805) info would be great, but also ant infilling stuff would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Windy

May I ask what 1805 record you have?

Barnaby's 1823 burial record gives an estimated year of birth of 1761. Only matching baptism I can see in the right area is in Offton on 1st March 1761, son of John & Elizabeth.

It seems Barnaby married Amy Brett in Lavenham on 14th February 1781; father is named as John Gilson, presumably because Barnaby was a minor. Poll books show a Barnaby Gilson, miller, living in Lavenham in 1790.

They did have a son called William, but he was baptised in 1790 so would only be 15 in 1805. Also had a son called Thomas, baptised 29th May 1798 in Willisham.

I can see Thomas in 1851 in Barking, living with his older brother Charles. They are both described as "master millers."

John & Elizabeth also had a son called William, baptised 15th September 1771 same place as Barnaby. By 1775, the family was in Barking, with Benjamin and Thomas Gilson baptised there on 30th July 1775.

Hi Queenie,

Great info.  Especially the Lavenham connection.

1805 reference comes from a Fire Insurance policy from the Royal Exchange (months & months going through hefty policy books several years back).  Barnby (sp) & William are described as millers & proprietors.

Do either of you know where I might search for Barnaby Gilson at Lavenham.  I'd be really interested in starting to look into which mill Gilson might have been at.  There were about 4/5 mills in and around Lavenham.  It is my burden in life to research Suffolk's +500 mills.

Not enough years in me I fear.  :-X
