Huntly burial 1879
« on: Thursday 11 April 24 00:18 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the burial of a Michael O'HALLORAN / HALLARAN who died in 30th May 1879 and buried 1st June 1879 in Huntley / Huntly according to death printout. They give the age as 22 yrs but he is probably about 35 years according to Paper past. Paper past gives to different ages.

He doesn't appear in any of Waikato / Hamilton / Waipu Cemetry Sites on line.

Anybody know of a Catholic Church that has a burial ground dating back to 1879 in Huntley area?

Regards

HELLO KT.

I can not answer your question directly, but I can advise that the Waikato District Council sextants office is baced at their WDC Huntly office, and if you have not been in touch with them directly, I suggest you do so.

Just phone the council office, and they will direct your call to the sextant's office.

I have found them very helpful in the past,

Alan.

HI AGAIN.

Sorry I have no time available to be doing a bit of research. There are a few newspaper notices where it is noted that the service would terminate at the railway station, with the body heading to a church cemetery in South Auckland or Auckland central.

The earliest colonial public cemeteries were at Cambridge, KIRIKIRIOA/HAMILTON, Ngaruawahia, followed by Taupiri. And note that the railway did not reach there until the late 1870's.

And again, another quick look.   The Auckland Star 10/4/1899 reporting on the Kirikiriroa Road Board meeting, stated that section 242 had only been temorarily rerserved, and that until the permanent reservation of Taupiri Cemetery, Trustees could not be elected.  So that rules out my suggestion of Taupiri being a contender.

Hello Alan

Thanks you looking.
Their where two O'Hallaron deaths that year, one was not named O'Halloran for Auckland and Michael O'Halloran in Huntly who drop dead on the lines, Both worked on the railway lines according to Paperpast. Michael  lived in Taupiri with his wife and two little children.  I could not find him in the public cemetery's I though he must of had a burial in a Catholic churchyard. The RC priest was the Revd F Golden.

OK.

If interested I can send you some photos of barren, early TAUPIRI in the era that the main trunk railway line was pushed through into the lower WAIKATO.

Will PM you with the heritage research email for a person who was a regular history contributor to the Saturday WAIKATO TIMES.  Using the by line of HERITAGE - The dead tell tales. Usualy containing the photo of a early grave, then a researched bio of their pioneering life.
