How to find a relatives birth name from 1870s
« on: Friday 12 April 24 00:50 BST (UK) »
I have a family member she would be my 3rd grandmother who was 100% native american. She married a white man which was a huge no no back then so she changed her name and moved. While now we are trying to find out her real name but we've looked on ancestry.com and family tree. We have no idea where to look next. We can only find records starting in 1870 when she was 10. Any tips or ideas that can help would be much appreciated.

We can only find records starting in 1870 when she was 10.

Wouldn't that 1870 record (presumably census) indicate her real name?  ??? Sorry, I'm confused as to what her actual names are, and when they changed.

Have you checked for her on any of the Native Indian census rolls (1885-1940)?

Do you know which Indian reservation she belonged to?

Marriage  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V2ZT-7X1

1880 census  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M4GV-FF8

An 1875 marriage would make her 14yrs old if she was b 1861

Is this her in the 1870 census? https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MHKQ-2S9

Before 1881, Alabama births weren't recorded by the county or state.
You'll need to check FS and Ancestry to confirm if any available marriage or death records for her record the parent's names (if they were known).
