No birth certificate that I can find
« on: Wednesday 17 April 24 23:16 BST (UK) »
I am at a 'brick wall'. On my wife's side of the family I cannot find any record of birth of her grandfather John Henry Jacques.
We are not sure where he was born the only thing we have to go on is on the 1921 census he has entered Birth Place Barnsley Yorkshire. We have his Army number 73739.
On his marriage cert 12 April 1917, he states he is 25yrs old, and his wife Lilian Street is listed as 30yrs old but 3 years later on the 1921 census she is 36 and he is 29yrs 8mths?
His father is listed as John Jacques (Deceased) on the wedding cert.
I have been going around in circles looking and don't know where else to look.
Can you help please.

Welcome to rootschat.

The army reference you have given does not have a middle name for John Jacques.  Do you have him in 1939 register or have his death which should give some idea of his birth date.

Possible death of LILY Jacques in SQ 1949 aged aged 65. This is same reg district that daughter Iris married in

There is a John JAQUES registered in Barnsley in 1895 ( indexed as JAGUES on GRO - mother's name WOOLHOUSE), have you discounted that one ?

Both Tom and Annie on 1921 census. so Tom isn't the deceased John

There's a Royal Artillery attestation record which suggests he was called up from the reserve for a brief period in the spring of 1921 - army number 1009722. It's possible that his service records were retained by the MoD and may still exist.
