Can you remember what he was doing in Nottinghamshire? Did he have relatives there?

John born 15.10 .1891

That's from the 1939 Register

On his death cert it states date & place of birth 24th October 1890, Wakefield Yorks

Is it Wakefield because of the gentleman farmer's son certificate, or did Colin believe that his father was born there? :-\

Throwing this one into the mix. I do not have access to ancestry images at the moment  :( so I am hoping the date of birth is right!
Baptism at Wakefield St Mary, 3 November 1891
John Edward Jakes
Born 15 October 1891
Parents Frederick + Elizabeth

It's on FamilySearch, but minus the birthdate
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N13Z-DMR

Frederick and Elizabeth as a couple are hard to find!
Registerd as Jaques, the GRO birth index has it as what looks like an illegitimate birth
JAQUES, JOHN  EDWARD
Mother's Maiden Surname:
GRO Reference: 1891  D Quarter in WAKEFIELD  Volume 09C  Page 37

And Yorkshire BMD says (NONE) for mother's maiden name
https://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk/birthsearch.php

Is there any further sign of John Edward?
Could he have reemerged later as John Henry Jacques, and made up his father name (also John) on his marriage (or perhaps used a step or adoptive father's name)

Hi Cas
That's good, thank you. So we do have a matching birth date with the 1939 Register entry.
And a birth certificate with the names John Edward not John Henry, and Jaques rather than Jacques.
It would certainly make it difficult to find.
Or it could be a different person! Hopefully something for bluetntmo to investigate.
John

The Royal Artillery attestation record is a little difficult to follow. It appears to have been prepared in the early 1920s: it has his new army number 1009722, his old number 73739, his marriage in 1917, the birth of  Irene Hilda in 1922.

It records that he originally attested in Halifax on 31 July 1913 aged 21 years and 9 months; that he was a collier and railway goods porter; that he was born in Barnsley; there is an address in Durham that appears to have been entered in 1921: 33 Ramsey Cottages, Swalwell.
