Is he my 2x Grt Grandfather
« on: Thursday 18 April 24 16:06 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am not sure I have asked about this topic in the past. It will be awhile ago so I have lost track. I apologize if I have.

My Grt Grandfather George Norman was born in west Bengal India in 1880. (there may be 3 children in total born in India) George's occupation was a deckhand in the Navy, he died in Ireland falling from a train in 1915.

Birth details
Name   George Norman
Gender   Male
Birth Date   29 Nov 1880
Baptism Date   15 Dec 1880
Baptism Age   0
Baptism Place   Bengal, India
Father   George Norman
Mother   Bridget

I found George along with his father on the 1911 Irish census.

On the census the Father was a widow (wife Bridget Mullin) aged 65, born Gravesend England, retired from the 39 Dord Regiment.

I found a George Norman on the 1871 Census based at the Royal Marine Barracks Gillingham, Kent.

I am trying to see if I can find a link.

Would either Royal Marines or the 39 Dord Regiment have been in India around 1880.

Thanks.

Just a  point that may help others when attempting to help you. Although I haven't quite made out what is written yet, I do think the transcription 'Dord' is likely incorrect:

I can see from his record that he was a Private in the 54th Foot, which matches George Jr.'s baptism record in Bengal in 1880.

He was also in the Dorset regiment, I think. It almost looks like 'Leorset' on the record.

The 39th regiment is also mentioned on the record, which matches up with the census.

EDIT: In India from 1871 to 1884.

Record states he married Bridget Mullins on 12th September 1870 in Galway.

EDIT: He did indeed. If you don't have it, here is his marriage certificate:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1870/11395/8184210.pdf

Only difference on the military record is that he states he was born in All Saints, near Sudbury, Suffolk.

The George at the Royal Marine Barracks in Gillingham in 1871 is listed as unmarried, but George married Bridget in 1870.

EDIT: Can see no mention of Royal Marines on military record.

Thank you Scotmum
I did search for the 39 Dord regiment and it took me to the Dorset Regiment, but i wasn't sure.

Thank you Queenie

You have been a great help. I can now rule out the George in the Royal Marines now.

Thank you so much for the certificate I am so excited now.

I need to pack up and eat (no chance now)

Thank you both again.

The 39th Regiment of Foot became the Dorsetshire Regiment in 1881 when it amalgamated with the 54th (West Norfolk) Regiment of Foot  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/39th_(Dorsetshire)_Regiment_of_Foot
