Thank you for that information, which leaves me in a quandary!!!

If a Roman Catholic priest performed the burial rites would this indicate the deceased was Roman Catholic or that a C of E Padre was not available??

I would suggest it's more than likely that the deceased was Roman Catholic.

Given the burial in unconsecrated ground, and with a RC chaplain officiating, I think it's beyond doubt that he was believed (by the army, and by the chaplain) to be a Roman Catholic

I think your reasonings, on the balance of probability, are correct and that the Army belief was as you suggest.
