Criminal records

Not something I've looked at much before .

So a few questions are coming up
& I'm finding it hard to find court transcripts & articles about the case .

First question is about Aliases : is there any convention about which name is given first

I think it's the one arrested under and previous names go back in time so the last one listed most likely to be the original name .

Could it be the Saint Giles Christian Mission (SGCM)?

"In 1877, what was known as Prison Gate work was started. The Mission set up huts outside Holloway, Pentonville and Wandsworth Prisons where newly discharged prisoners were offered breakfast and assistance often in the form of travel money to get home, clothing, and assistance with employment, as well as encouragement to take the temperance pledge.

Work among first time offenders continued with the opening of a series of hostels and homes between 1880's and 1900. These catered for young offenders who were encouraged and supported to find work or enter the armed services".

Thank you it's very interesting
Some of the criminals on same page were discharged to RSADP London
Which was probably something similar

The lady I'm investigating was discharged to her mother's address which makes it easier to confirm it's the same person ..despite different names the final conviction gives her other aliases and number of previous convictions

First question is about Aliases : is there any convention about which name is given first

Recent convention is that whatever name the person first gets dealt with under becomes their "file name" and doesn't change.....any other name they later come to notice under is an alias.

I'd like to be able to read the court records

+ Wonder how 2 larcenys became a felony .

I have a thread which is  on the Irish forum at the moment because the baby was born in Ireland
But the couple I'm looking at are
Alice Barrow 1866 Lancashire
&
Her husband George  Daniel Mansfield B 1865  but that might not be his real name

You beat me to it Heywood I was just copying the link .

It's reply 48 that is of interest.

We now know Alice Barrows origins and her convictions
+ Even her physical description

But George MANSFIELD is elusive

I know what became of their daughter Frances Gertrude  MANSFIELD & her children with first husband

But don't know what became of the daughter she had with John DAVIES

I'm trying to look for more details about these convictions

I have access to ancestry
