Townsend’s of Regent’s Square, Sykes Street, Hull
« on: Sunday 21 April 24 10:25 BST (UK) »
I recently inherited some pictures drawn by Charles Herve of Regent Street, London of 2 individuals from Hull.
They are Joseph Townsend aged 32 and Sarah Townsend aged 31 produced in September 1838 with their address given as 6 Regent Square, Sykes Street, Hull.

I've not been able to find any information about them and the occupants of 6 Regent Sq on the 1841 census are not the Townsends. I’d be grateful of some help on any information about this couple as they don’t appear to be related to the relative I inherited these pictures from. I’m also curious as to why this couple came to London to have their portraits painted in London, was the Sculcoates area of Hull at this time a wealthy area? What line of work could they have possibly be involved in?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Are their ages actually shown on the drawing?

Difficult one - but is the pose on the drawing suggestive of them being a married couple rather than ??brother & sister?

Good point they could be brother and sister, the pictures are separate (and too large to post here) the ages are noted on the back of the portraits

There are a Joseph and Sarah Townsend of approximately the correct age in 1841 staying at the Boars Head, Slade End, North Witchford, [near Ely I believe]. They are both born out of county. Unfortunately A******y doesn't point to any other records for either of them.

On that 1841 entry Joseph's occupation looks like Army.  Sarah was b Ireland

Thanks, I thought it might be an abbreviated ‘attorney’ but was not at all confident.
