Marriage 1941

Hello everyone

I'm looking for details of a marriage between Edith May Nundy and a George A Barkei (Barker?)

They married at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Skegness on 20th December 1941.

Edith (born in Grimsby 08/12/1913) was living in Skegness, Lincs at the time, and George was from Southsea, Hants and in the R.N.V.S.  We understand that Edith was possibly in the Wrens and they were both possibly based on the Naval camp at Ingoldmells.

I was hoping to view an online marriage record through the GRO but don't think marriages can be accessed via that?

I cannot find any details out about this George Barker and I'm just trying to confirm that it is the correct Edith May Nundy in this marriage.

Can anyone offer any direction for me, please?

The newspaper, The Skegness Standard, 24 December 1941 carried:-

BARKER - NUNDY, at the church of the Sacred Heart, Skegness, on Dec 20th 1941, George A Barker, R.N.V.R. of Southsea, Hants to Edith Nundy, of 'Belgrave' Scarborogh Avenue, Skegness

Whereas the announcement states George A Barker, it does not mention a second name for Edith.

Looking at the 1939 National register for a Nundy family living in Skegness brings up:-

11 Scarborough Avenue, Skegness
Alice N Nundy -- dob 27/12/1898 -- Single -- Apartment House Prop
George A Nundy -- dob 8/7/1890 -- Single -- Joiner
Edith C Nundy Barker -- dob 12/7/1921 -- Single -- General Office Clerk
John J W Nundy -- dob 3/2/1924 -- Single -- Apprentice Garage Mechanic

The fact that Edith's surname was crossed out at a later date and replaced with Barker would be due to her marrying. This could well be the Edith that you are looking for. Her date of birth is almost 8 years after the one that you have for Edith May Nundy.

In 1939 there is a Edith M MUNDY (looks like NUNDY on the image) living in Grimsby, with the same DOB you give.

That’s odd, as I’d looked on the 1939 register, choosing all name variants, and yet it didn’t come up..

That could be possible, as she’d always been a domestic in the local area.

But then she did have a spell in the WRENS, spending time in Hampshire.  So….onwards and upwards with the research.

Unfortunately that family is not part of our Nundy family.

Edith may have been a domestic in Grimsby (according to the 1939 register - and with a spelling variant).

But she went in the WRENS in Hampshire at some point (hence my querying the marriage to George Barker from Hampshire - who was in the R.N.V.S.) Might just be a coincidence.

So, if your Edith was in the WRENS (see clipping below) she couldn't be the woman who married Mr Barker in 1941. Because this lady is still Edith Nundy in Dec 1942.

 It definitely looks like Nundy, but there is  no name additions beside the entry, so if she did marry it was never noted on the register.

Edith may have been a domestic in Grimsby (according to the 1939 register - and with a spelling variant).

The register says she was unemployed, so presumably it was domestic work within her home.

Funnily enough, Edith spent many of her younger years in that very same children’s home in brighowgate.

What’s the best way for me to check out her forces record would you think?
